Hot Water Tank leaks through Pressure Relief ValveAfter installing the filter, my hot water heater starting leaking through the pressure relief valve. I had the relief valve replaced twice. After research through my friend (the googler) I found out that the GE - GXWH40L Filter has a check valve built in to keep water in the line while changing the filter. So when cold water enters the hot water heater and get heated, it expands causing too much pressure in the line because it has no place to go. I have a well with a brand new surge tank that would work great without a check valve. So I used a 1" hole saw and removed the check valve. I wouldn't recommend it but it is cheaper than installing another surge tank by the hot water heater. Now I have more flow through the filter but it leaks while changing the filter. So what. I put a bucket under anyway. It does a great job of filtering out the dirt.

A very good water filter. We kept getting water that seemed to have particles in it. We have city water and thought that it was no biggie. But - I decided to install this household filter system. The first time after installation we noticed that the showers did not have the chlorine, cool. Also after about 2 1/2 months it turned almost black and water pressure had reduced. . no biggie I replaced the filter. It was doing its job. Now for a surprise. About 2 weeks later it was really black and water pressure had went down. I thought that I had bought a bum filter. Replaced it and all was well. A couple of days later I found out the city had worked on the main water line. . . dirty water ran amuck. . our whole house and hot water heater would have suffered, except we had that filter. . . . yeaaaaa.
Was easy to install. Plumbing knowledge needed. Yes it does its job. Just a slight drop in water pressure, no biggie. It is a neat clean system, filters are easy to replace.
