Air Conditioner - Sone or Decibel Rating

Room air conditioners list decibel ratings in the specifications when they are available. In general, if they are not listed, there is not a decibel (or sone) rating available. They are not all rated for sound performance. You are more likely to see a decibel rating in the specifications for a newer air conditioner model.

With residential air conditioners, the sound levels are actually more dependent on installation factors than on the sound produced by the unit. The installation variables can depend on (but are not limited to):

  • The location of the unit within the home.

  • The type of unit (a wall unit compared to a window mounted unit).

  • How it is mounted in a window.
