Refrigerator - Spotting on Lettuce
Reddish-Brown (russett) spots on lettuce and other leafy type vegetables are NOT caused by a malfunctioning component within the refrigerator, if cooling properly. The spotting on the vegetables is caused by storing fruits such as melons, apples, pears too close to the leafy vegetables. The reddish-brown (russet) spots that appear are a result of a chemical action that takes place between the two foods. We do not recommend such items be stored together.
