Vent Hood System - Air Draw

A vent hood system should properly remove most heat, steam, and smoke from the cooktop surface below. If boiling or simmering for long periods of time on the front burners, the vent will not always be capable of capturing all of the excess steam. It may be necessary to use the back burners in this case.

If the hood is vented internally, we recommend replacing the charcoal filter every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage. You can order replacement filters on our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.

Checking a Vent Hood System For Proper Air Draw

The tissue test below can be used to check for proper air draw of a vent hood. This test also applies to high-low ranges and high-low microwave vent models.

Turn the vent fan on HIGH and hold a tissue under the vent area. The suction should hold the tissue in place. The draw is equal on both sides. It is normal to have some air blowing out of the top grill.

Note: For Under-the-Cabinet vent hoods, there is some airflow through both filters. However, the air flow is not precisely equal on both sides.
