Top-Freezer Refrigerators - Garage-Ready Models Not Cooling
If the refrigerator is running but not cooling at all or is not cold enough, several factors may influence the temperature.Check the following:
-
Confirm surrounding air temperatures have been within 38-110°F. Extreme temperatures outside this temperature range will affect cooling, causing the unit to be less efficient. Below 32 °F, there is no cooling capability at all. At temperatures exceeding 110°F, there is a possibility of the oil overheating and breaking down, thus damaging the compressor or sealed system.
-
Check current refrigerator and freezer internal temperatures by checking food temperatures. See Refrigerator - Measuring Internal Temperatures.
-
If food temps are normal, the cause may be bulk items recently added or high usage in a warm environment.
-
If food temps are elevated, then inspect where temperature controls are set.
-
If controls are set to 3 or “Recommended”, try adjusting the controls.
-
If refrigerator control is set to a colder setting, i.e. 4 or 5, then schedule service.
-
-
-
Check for frost buildup in the freezer.
-
Frost occurs when warm external air enters the unit and freezes. Reduce frost from occurring by ensuring the doors close properly and that the gasket is not damaged or loose.
-
If possible, remove food and manually defrost by unplugging the unit. If frost doesn’t go away after 24-48 hours, schedule service.
-
If the above items do not fix the issue and you still have a no-cool situation, you may need to schedule service. Please schedule the appointment with GE Appliances Factory Service.
MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE UNIT PLUGGED IN UNTIL THE TECHNICIAN ARRIVES. This is to ensure that the symptoms will not disappear. For non-Garage-Ready refrigerators not cooling properly, please see Refrigerator Not Cooling Enough.
