GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer - Excessive Noise or Shaking

The GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo is intentionally designed to move about 1/4” to reduce forces transmitted to your floor. The less force it transmits to the floor, the less noise you hear throughout the room. You will see the Combo shake and hear it, but this is a normal part of the balancing system.

The Ultrafast Combo can be installed in the upper floors of a home. It's important to make sure that the upper floor can support the Combo. To make sure the Combo does not vibrate or move, you may have to reinforce the floor. If the floor is in poor condition, use 3/4" impregnated plywood sheet and solidly attach it to the existing floor covering. It's also critical that it is installed properly.

The information below covers unusual or excessive noises and movements from the Combo. It also provides possible solutions. Remember, your UltraFast Combo is a Smart appliance. Keeping it connected to WiFi means you will always have the latest software version for the best possible performance. So before you perform any troubleshooting, make sure your Combo's software is up-to-date.

UltraFast Combo Was Just Installed

Shipping Bolts Not Removed

Failure to remove all shipping material can cause your Combo to become severely unbalanced.

Similar to front load washers, the Combo has shipping bolts, brackets, and spacers that keep the wash basket secure during shipping. They are located in the rear, and need to be removed before using the appliance. These are the parts that need to be removed:

  • 4 bolts
  • 4 plastic spacers (including power cord retainers and rubber grommets)
  • 2 brackets and the screws fastening them to the Combo
For step by step instructions, your Owner's Manual is your best resource. If you prefer video instructions, our "GE Profile™ UltraFresh Washer and UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer Removing Shipping Hardware" video will take you through the steps.

Note: Save the shipping bolts and spacers in case the Combo needs to be moved. To protect the appliance, they should be reinstalled when being transported. The brackets are not required, and can be discarded.

Not Leveled Properly

If the Combo is uneven, or rocks excessively during operation, it may not be leveled properly. Make sure all of the rubber leveling legs are firmly touching the floor and the appliance is level both front-to-back and side-to-side. If the appliance is not level, check the following:

  1. Adjust the rubber leveling legs up or down so they are all firmly touching the floor.
  2. Ensure the lock nuts on the legs are tightened to the base of the Combo.
  3. Place a level on top of the Combo to verify it's level. If it is installed under a counter, just make sure it doesn't rock.
It's better to keep the leg as short as possible to prevent excessive vibration. The farther out the legs are extended, the more the Combo will vibrate. The only time we recommend extending the legs is if the floor is uneven or damaged.

There is a special wrench that comes with the Ultrafast Combo to be able to level the legs. If you misplace the wrench, you can order a replacement Leveling Leg Wrench (WH01X3747) .

Your Owner's Manual covers the step-by-step instructions for leveling your Combo.

Installation with a Riser

The UltraFast Combo can be installed with the 7"H RightHeight™ Riser GFR0728PTDS. When installed with the Riser, you'll want to make sure that the Riser and Combo are installed and leveled as described in the GFR728 Riser Installation Instructions. Please note that we do not recommend installation on a pedestal, only this Riser. If you have shaking or noise after they are installed together, check the following.

  • There are front brackets that attach to the Riser and to the Combo that hook together when you install the two together. When moving the Riser and Combo upright, make sure they stay hooked together.
  • Make sure the rear brackets are aligned so that the Combo bracket is inside the Riser bracket.
  • Check the installation instructions to make sure the 4 screws around the perimeter are fastened properly.
  • When using the Riser, the Combo's feet need to be tightened down to be snug against the top of the Riser and the lock nuts tightened.
  • Once you install the legs from the Riser parts package, make sure the leg lock nuts are tightened and the appliance is level from side-to-side and front-to-back.
The above check points are also viewable in the following video titled "GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer Installation on a Riser":

Shaking and Noise After the UltraFast Combo Has Been in Operation

Unbalanced Load

An unbalanced load can cause excessive vibration or shaking. If this happens, press Pause on the control, open the door, and try to redistribute the load more evenly. If this doesn't help, run an empty load on Rinse & Spin to see if the shaking or noise occurs with nothing in the basket. If it is normal with no load, then the unbalance was caused by the load.
  • Please note that your load size matters. A load that consists of only one or two items is likely to get out of balance more easily than a full load.
  • Also, if your Combo is set for a Wash + Dry cycle and the load becomes unbalanced, the Combo will try to rebalance the load multiple times during the spin cycle. If you don't follow the instructions above for redistributing the load and the Combo has reached the maximum number of rebalance attempts, the Combo will proceed to the Dry cycle and try to dry the load. Multiple rebalance attempts will result in a longer than normal cycle time, as there will be a lot more water present in the load than would normally be removed in the spin cycle.

Pump Filter Clogged

The pump filter catches loose items so they don't get into the pump. A clogged pump filter can keep the appliance from draining well, which can cause unbalanced loads and other spinning issues. The pump filter is easy to access and clean. You can find directions, access to your Owner's Manual, and a short, instructional video at: GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer - Cleaning the Pump Filter.

Inlet Hoses

It is normal to hear a "clunk" sound during the water fill process as the water valves shut off. The inlet hoses will normally move, possibly hitting the rear of the Combo and contributing to this sound. To check this, try pulling your Combo out away from the wall enough so that the hoses are hanging away and free from the rear of the Combo. Then test it by starting a cycle. If the noise dissipates, we suggest determining a way to keep the hoses away from the Combo's rear panel, such as wrapping a towel or something similar around the hoses to create a cushion.

Support

If you find that your GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo is continuing to shake, vibrate, or move excessively after checking the above suggestion, the next step is to schedule a repair with one of our GE Appliances Factory Service technicians.
