GE Profile™ Grind & Brew Coffee Maker - Cleaning and Descaling

For optimal appearance and performance, here are some cleaning tips for your GE Profile™ Grind & Brew Coffee Maker:

 

Prior to First Use

After unboxing your new coffee maker, you'll want to do the following.

 
  1. Wipe the exterior with a warm cloth.
  2. With the coffee maker unplugged, wash the mesh filter, brew basket, and carafe in warm, soapy water with a soft cloth. Do not use paper towels or abrasive cleansers, pads, or cloths, which can scratch the surface.
  3. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
 

NOTE: Coffee maker parts are NOT dishwasher safe.

 

After Each Use

After each brew, follow the recommendations below.

 
  1. Rinse the mesh basket filter and brew basket under running water.
    • For a deeper clean, wash in warm, soapy water with a soft-bristled brush. Remember, these parts are NOT dishwasher safe.
  2. Empty the carafe.
  3. Rinse the carafe and lid under warm running water.
    • For a deeper clean, wash regularly in warm, soapy water with a soft-bristled brush. Do not use abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the finish.
  4. Rinse and dry the carafe and lid thoroughly.
 

Clean the Grinder

The Clean Grind alert appears on screen after 25 cycles of grinding. The grind chute should be cleaned after long-term use.  Here are the steps for cleaning the grinder chute and the upper burr.

 
  1. Press and hold the Grind Off button to start the cleaning process.
  2. Open the brew basket and put a kitchen towel on the carafe sitting area.
  3. Then use a brush to clean the coffee ground buildup inside of the chute.
  4. Clean the upper burr by following these steps:
    1. Make sure all the coffee beans have been consumed by the grinder first.
    2. Then remove the removable burr from the grinder.
    3. Use a brush to clean the grinder.
  5. Place the removable burr back into position and secure it by rotating clockwise until the arrow points to the lock icon. The display will show a "Check Grinder" error message and stop grinding if the burr is not secured in the locked position.
 

Clean the Showerhead

The showerhead can be removed by rotating and pulling down.

 
  1. Open the brew chamber and locate the showerhead underneath the grind chamber.
  2. Wash regularly in warm, soapy water with a soft-bristled brush. Do not use abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the finish.
  3. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
 

Descaling

When the Descale alert appears on screen, or when the water reservoir is filled with water but the Add Water alert is still illuminated during brewing, this indicates that the heating efficiency of the heater is low due to a build-up of hard water. The descale process cleans the internal components of your coffee maker, protects against hard water build-up, and ensures optimal machine performance.  Follow these instructions to descale your Grind and Brew:

 
  1. To start descaling, press the Setting (Gear) button on the control panel, then follow the guidance.
  2. Once the brew starts, a 1:00 hour countdown timer will begin for the descaling process. “Descaling” will scroll across the screen while the timer counts down. When this one-hour slow brewing process is complete, the screen will show a scrolling display that says, “Empty carafe then brew 10 cups water”.
  3. Empty the coffee carafe.
  4. Rinse the water reservoir and fill it with 10 cups of fresh water.
  5. After the descaling process is complete, press the brew button to go through a normal brewing process to flush the system.
  6. The system will turn off the Descale notification and reset the descale reminder.  Your Grind and Brew will go back to the standby mode and is ready for use.
 

To cancel the descaling process, simply press and hold the Brew button.  This will cause the Descale alert not to reset.
