Front Load Washer - Cleaning the Tub

It is possible for odors to occur inside a Front Load washer tub over time. Using the appropriate amount of detergent with each load and using HE detergent can help. GE Appliances recommends cleaning the washer tub once per month to keep the wash basket fresh and clean. This will help with mold, mildew, or other odors. The process for cleaning a Front Load washer tub is listed below.

Models with a BasketClean or Self Clean Cycle

  • Use the BasketClean or Self Clean cycle with 1 cup of bleach or a commercially available product manufactured for this purpose. GE Appliances recommends Tide Washing Machine Cleaner for best results. Consult the Owner's Manual for the washer you own for specific cleaning instructions.
The following video demonstrates the use of the BasketClean feature:

Models Without a BasketClean Cycle

  • Run a large Heavy/Cotton wash cycle with no items in the wash basket and 1 cup of bleach or a commercially available product manufactured for this purpose. We recommend Tide Washing Machine Cleaner for best results. Repeat if necessary. Tide Washing Machine Cleaner is available locally at most grocery and retails stores.
If the drain hose is pushed too far into the drain stand pipe, it can siphon drained water back into the washer causing a musty odor. We recommend clipping the hose to the side of the stand pipe so this does not occur.
