Dryers Clearance Minimum Requirements

For proper air circulation and correct installation, some appliances must have air clearances around the product. Installations can vary, so checking the installation instructions to determine space requirements for your specific model is recommended.

For alcove and closet installations, minimum clearances between dryer cabinet and adjacent walls or other surfaces are:

  • 1" front and rear
  • 1" top

Note: Some dryers require additional air clearance. Consult the Installation Instructions for model specific clearances. Download a copy of the Installation Instructions.

Note:  Any dryer enclosure or room that does not have an inlet and outlet (when door is closed) for an operating forced air HVAC system is considered a closet, and requires room venting.

For Gas Dryers Only: No other fuel burning appliance shall be installed in the same closet as a gas dryer.

  • Whether a closet or small room, the laundry room ventilation is governed by the Mechanical code and the local codes, so a HVAC engineer has to decide if a particular configuration is accurate. In this situation, removing the door of the closet or small room completely is suggested.
