Wall Oven or Range - Benefit of the Self-Clean Cycle

The self-clean cycle saves time and energy. The oven is cleaned by heat at temperatures above normal cooking temperatures, which causes soil to disappear from the oven. A device in the oven, called a smoke-eliminator, further converts soil into an essentially odorless colorless vapor.

More About Self-Clean:

  • A slight odor may be detected the first few times the oven is cleaned.
  • During the self-cleaning cycle the oven is heated to a maximum of 885 degrees Fahrenheit (471 C). At these temperatures food soils inside the oven decomposes.
  • The cycle takes from one and a half hours to four hours, depending upon the amount of soil. Only a slight ash remains. This wipes out easily with a wet cloth.
  • When self-cleaning (in most models) for both gas and electric ovens, the bake and broil elements are used and either may glow. Most electronic controls engage the broil for the first 1/2 hour then turn it off and engage the bake element the rest of the time.
Please consult the Owner's Manual regarding the set-up of the self clean cycle. This may also be called Auto Clean on older models.
