Microwave - Interior Clearance and Maximum Dish Size

In both traditional and convection microwaves. The food, dish, or pan should have a least 1" clearance (in all directions) from the walls and door. This allows the turntable to rotate properly without the food or pan touching the sides, as well as allows for proper circulation.

To determine what sized pan you can use:

  1. Determine the interior dimensions for your model. You can measure by hand or find the cavity dimensions in your model's specifications online.
  2. Measure your pan or dish. Be sure to take in account the handles on the dish or pan.
    • A round pan just needs to be 2" less than the lesser interior measurement, which is usually the depth from front to back.
    • A square or rectangular pan is longest on the diagonal. Make sure the pan on the diagonal is 2" less than the lesser interior measurement, which is usually the depth from front to back.

Example:

If the interior is 21-3/4"W x 20"D, then you want to make sure the pan is 18" round or 18" at the diagonal (including handles that stick out). We say the pan needs to be 2" less because you need 1" clearance from the back wall and 1" from the door at the same time; this equals 2".

Note:

  • We recommend 2", but it will not harm the unit if your clearance is less. It DOES need to be less than the interior depth and keep in mind the cooking performance may be negatively impacted.
  • Always keep the glass tray in place when microwaving or convection cooking.
  • Food, pans, or dishes should never touch the walls while cooking.
