French Door Refrigerator Fresh Food Doors Open Together

On French Door refrigerators, opening one door can open the other because of the DOOR-TO-DOOR and GASKET-TO-GASKET design of the double fresh food doors.

There is more friction between the door-to-door surfaces of the double fresh-food doors, which means the texture of surfaces of the doors that touch in the middle can make one door open the other.

Additionally, the doors also have a gasket-to-gasket seal design where they touch in the middle; this design helps maintain the cold temperatures of a refrigerator with 3 doors. However, the design means that the doors can stick together because the rubber gaskets are touching in the middle -- because the gaskets stick to promote a good seal, it can also cause one door to open when the other is opened.

To resolve, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly on the part of the fresh-food door gasket that touches the other fresh-food door gasket. This will ensure that the doors do not stick together, while maintaining the proper seal when the doors are closed.

Petroleum jelly is non-toxic. DO NOT USE other oil-based lubricants, like WD40, on the refrigerator, which can come in contact with foods or beverages.
