Disposing of an Appliance
If you are disposing of an appliance:
-
For questions on disposing of an appliance, please contact your local waste management company, recycle center, or landfill.
-
Most appliances with refrigerant will need to be drained before being put in the trash or recycled.
-
Note: Asbestos has not been used in GE Appliance products since 1979.
-
-
There are companies that offer junk disposal services can properly recycle and/or dispose of appliances. Check with the company to verify.
-
Some retailers or utility companies collect and recycle appliances, especially if you are purchasing a new appliance.
-
You may want to consider donating the appliance to a charitable organization.
Refrigeration / Air Conditioning Special Considerations
If the appliance uses refrigerant (refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, dehumidifier, etc.), special disposal procedures will be necessary. The refrigerant needs to be drained before being put in the trash or recycled.
Visit the EPA.gov (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) site for recommendations: Safe Disposal of Refrigerated Household Appliances.
-
It is the responsibility of the owner to make sure the product is drained properly if your waste management or recycling company (or haul-away service) does not offer disposal services. In this case, you would need a technician. For service, please schedule an appointment with Bodewell.
DANGER: Risk of child entrapment. Before you throw away your old refrigerator or freezer: Take off the doors and leave the shelves in place so that children may not easily climb inside.
