GE Profile™ GEOSPRING™ Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater - Fan Motor Running and Sounds
Unlike gas and standard electric water heaters, heat pump water heaters have a fan and other components that make noise.
Fan Operation
In the GE Profile™ GEOSPRING™ Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater, air is moved by a fan at the back of the water heater near the top. You will hear the sound of the fan pulling air through the heat pump system. As the water heater determines the right amount of energy needed to heat the water, the fans will change speed and the sound will increase and decrease.
The water heater's fan sound is similar to the hum of a microwave vent fan. It only occurs when the water heater is recovering (heating water) and is not constant.
Factors That Affect Sound
Two factors that impact the sound of the fan motors:
Ambient Air Temperature
The colder ambient temperature, the faster the fan speed.
Average Tank Temperature.
The lower the average tank temperature, the faster the fan will run. The warmer the average tank temperature, the slower the fan will run.
