GeoSpring Hybrid Electric Water Heater Fan Motor Running and Sounds

The air is moved through the water heater by two fans located at the back of the water heater near the top. You will hear the sound of these fans pulling the air through the heat pump system of the water heater. As the water heater determines the right amount of energy needed to heat the water the fans will change speed and the sound will increase and decrease. Two factors that impact the sound of the fan motors:

  1. The ambient air temperature. The colder ambient temperature, the faster the fan speed.
  2. Average tank temperature. The lower average tank temperature, the faster the fans will run. The warmer the average tank temperature, the slower the fans will run.

The GeoSpring's fan sound is similar to the hum of a microwave vent fan. It is important to note that the sound only occurs when the water heater is recovering and is not constant.Installation in a utility closet near a bedroom or other occupied living space should take into consideration the sound factor.
