Side-by-Side Refrigerator - External Temperature Controls

For all refrigerators with an external temperature display on the dispenser control panel, the temperature display will fade out ("go into sleep mode") after a short period of time. It illuminates while setting the temperatures but does not stay illuminated constantly. There is not a way to make the temperature display stay on all the time.

External Controls with Temperature Settings 1 through 9:

On most Hotpoint and some GE Side-by-Side refrigerators, the external controls show temperature ranges with the numerical ranking of 1 through 9 with 9 being the coldest. These digital controls are factory preset at 5 and can be adjusted by touching the “Warmer” or “Colder” pad until the desired setting is displayed. The setting of 5 for both the fresh food and freezer sections is the recommended setting for most environments.

Note: For information on how to check internal temperatures in the fresh food and freezer sections, see Refrigerator - Measuring Internal Temperatures.

External Controls with Temperature Settings in Degrees:

Certain GE and GE Profile™ Side-by-Side style refrigerators have actual temperature displays that show interior temperatures on the dispenser control display. The actual temperature display removes the guesswork in setting refrigerator temperatures. Electronic temperature sensors constantly measure the fresh food and freezer temperatures. The fresh food temperature is factory preset at 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer is set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. The fresh food setting is adjustable between 34 to 44 degrees and the freezer setting is adjustable between –6 to +6 degrees. Once the desired temperature has been set, the temperature display will return to the actual refrigerator and freezer temperatures until the new set temperature is reached.
