If the icemaker in your Refrigerator is getting water and making ice, but there is no water coming from the water dispenser, there are a few things you can check. Please review the tips below in an effort to resolve this concern without the need for repair service.
New Installation
The reservoir tank or tubing has not filled yet. Press the dispenser for several minutes to purge air from the line and make sure all the tubing is filled with water.
If the doors were removed during installation, make sure the wiring harness is plugged in. The wiring harness is located under the upper freezer door hinge cover or at the bottom of the freezer door, depending on the model. You can consult the Installation Instructions for your specific model to check on this.
Frozen Tank or Tubing
The water reservoir tank or tubing could be frozen. If frozen, you would get water to the icemaker but not the dispenser.
The water reservoir tank or tubing is typically located behind the vegetable drawers or on the left side of the fresh food compartment.
To rid the tank or tubing of ice, check the set temperature on your controls. If it is set colder than the recommended setting in the Owner's Manual for your fridge, adjust the temperature to a warmer setting and allow 24-48 hours for the ice to clear.
Water Filter
On Refrigerators with a water filter, a clogged water filter can prevent water from entering the icemaker and dispenser. This filter should be changed every six months or when the water filter indicator light comes on. To determine if the filter is clogged, remove the filter and replace with the water filter bypass plug that was provided with the Refrigerator. If water is dispensed, the water filter is the issue.
Need the bypass plug? If the plastic bypass plug was not supplied with the Refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 1-800-561-3344.
If you just replaced the water filter and don't have water from the dispenser, the reservoir tank or tubing has not filled yet. Press the dispenser for several minutes to purge air from the line and make sure all the tubing is filled with water.
