Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - How to Change the Water Filter
Almost all Bottom Freezer Refrigerators made nowadays have an internal water filter. The water for both the ice cubes and drinking water is filtered. The type of water filter you have in your Refrigerator does vary by model. Listed below is information about the various water filters and how to change them.
Locating the Water Filter Cartridge
The location of your water filter and filter type varies based on your Refrigerator model. Typical locations on Bottom Freezer Refrigerators include the back upper right corner, inside the left door or the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment.
Knowing When to Replace the Water Filter
Most Bottom Freezer Refrigerators have a filter replacement indicator light on the water dispenser control panel. This light will indicate when it is time to replace your water filter. The filter cartridge should be replaced when the replacement indicator light comes on or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.

When you are replacing the cartridge, you start by removing the old one. Open the cartridge cover by pressing in on the tab at the front and pulling down. Remove the cartridge by slowly rotating it counterclockwise. A small amount of water may drip down.
CAUTION: If air has been trapped in the system, the filter cartridge may be ejected as it is removed. Use caution when removing.
Remove the protective foil from the end of the cartridge. Lining up the arrow on the cartridge and the cartridge holder, slowly rotate the cartridge clockwise until it stops. When the cartridge is properly installed, you will feel it “click” as it locks into place. The blade on the end of the cartridge should be positioned vertically. Do not overtighten the filter. A newly installed water filter cartridge may cause water to spurt from the dispenser.
Close the cartridge cover. Run water from the dispenser for 3 minutes (about 1 1/2 gallons) to clear the system and prevent sputtering. Press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER indicator pad for 3 seconds, if applicable.
Using a Water Filter Bypass Plug
You must use the filter bypass plug when a replacement water filter cartridge is not available. The icemaker will not operate without the filter or filter bypass plug. If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the Refrigerator or has been misplaced, you can order one at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 1-800-561-3344.
