Washers - Leaking in Rear

Water leaking from the rear of a top-load or front-load washer is often related to installation, hoses leaking, or plumbing issues.

Here are some things you can check:

  • When installing a new washer you must remove a red or blue plug to install the drain hose. When removing the plug, you may get a small spill of water due to testing at the factory. This is normal. The drain attaches at right rear.

  • A 30" minimum drain hose facility (stand pipe) is required.

  •
    • Make sure the drain hose is secured and fully inserted into the drainpipe. 1995 and newer models: The drain hose should be secured and fully inserted into the washer drain hose port prior to assembly of the plastic drain hose clamp. A plastic retainer clamp is used to attach the drain hose to the back of the washer. When the hose is inserted correctly, the retainer clamp will not be flush with the cabinet. But, once the two clamp screws are installed and tightened, the clamp will be pulled to the cabinet.

    • Watch the standpipe (drainpipe) as the washer spins. If water backs up in the pipe and overflows onto the floor, often happening about 3/4 of the way through the spin, this could indicate a household plumbing problem, requiring a plumber.

  • Check the fill hoses. Before checking the fill hoses, be sure to shut off the water supply to the fill hoses.

    • Black rubber washer inserts are included in the installation package. If these are not installed, there will be water leaking from the fill hoses at the faucet.

    • If connections are "hand" tight, but still leaking, at either end, check for a missing or damaged rubber washer, or damage to the hose.

    • The fill hose screens and washers should be changed about every 5 years to prevent leaking.

Floors can sometimes be uneven, so a leak in the rear of the washer may show up in the front or vice versa. Make sure you determine the actual location of the leak.
