Refrigerator - Icemaker Not Filling Enough

If it seems like the icemaker in your refrigerator is not getting the full amount of water in the ice cube mold, there are a couple of things you can check prior to scheduling a repair.

Checking an Icemaker That Is Not Getting Enough Water

If the icemaker is only partially filling with water, you will typically notice the following symptoms.

  • You may get only 3, 4 or 5 cubes, instead of the normal 7 or 8.
  • You may also have hollow or "mushy" ice cubes.

Check the following conditions for the water supply.

  • Make sure you have proper water pressure to the refrigerator. The water pressure must be between 40 and 120 PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • If you are using a self-tapping saddle-valve, we recommend changing it to one that is not self-tapping. Self-tapping valves do not provide a proper opening for water to pass through. Saddle valves that require drilling a 1/4" hole in the pipe are the best to use and can be purchased at a local hardware or plumbing supply store.
