Ice Maker - Cubes Odor or Bad Taste

Should you have a concern with a bad taste or odor coming from the ice cubes in a stand-alone ice maker, please review the following tips in an effort to remedy the situation.

Diagnosing Bad Taste or Odor from Ice Cubes in a Stand-Alone Ice Maker

Please check the following if there is an odor or bad taste.

  • A certain amount of naturally-occurring minerals in water makes hard water which affects the quality of the ice.
  • Water quality can affect the taste and smell of cubes. If you have hard water in your area, you may find it necessary to add a water filtering system or to treat the water with a softening system to improve taste and smell.
  • Are any food or beverage items stored in the ice machine? Storing food or beverage items in the ice machine is not recommended. It can transfer bad odors or tastes to the ice itself. Remove any objects that you have placed in the ice bin to keep cool, store those items in a refrigerator or freezer.
  • Clean the ice storage bucket to improve the odor or taste. Cleaning the ice storage bin can improve the odor or taste of the ice. Discard ice or temporarily store ice in another clean container. Clean the storage bucket with mild dish soap and water. Rinse well.

Note: This is a stand-alone ice maker not an icemaker in a refrigerator.
