GE Profile™ GEOSPRING™ Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater - Use with Timer

The GE Profile™ GEOSPRING™ hybrid heat pump water heater can be used with a timer; however, using a timer may actually increase your energy consumption.

Benefit of the Hybrid Heating System

The GeoSpring is designed to maximize energy efficiency by using the heat pump as the primary means to heat the water. There are also standard electric elements that come on if the water temperature in the tank falls too low. This usually happens in a high hot water demand situation. The GeoSpring can maximize energy efficiency using the heat pump under normal conditions and also recover just like a standard electric water heater under high demand conditions.

What Happens When a Timer is Used

Putting a timer on a water heater will turn the power On and Off at specific times. This could present a problem if the water temperature in the GeoSpring's water tank drops too low during an off period. When the unit is reenergized, it could sense a low water temperature in the water heater (a high-demand situation) and use the less efficient standard electric elements to recover the water temperature more quickly.

Without the timer, power would not have been interrupted to the water heater and the GeoSpring would have used the heat pump to more efficiently maintain the water temperature. By using the standard electric elements, you will have used more electricity and reduced your savings.
