Refrigerator - White Particles in Ice Cubes

It is not uncommon to see white particles in ice cubes. You may notice white particles as the ice melts and see them in the bottom of a glass or container. The explanation for this is provided below.

Observing White Particles in Ice Cubes

If you see white particles in frozen ice cubes or melting ice, these particles are minerals that are in your water. All water contains some dissolved minerals and areas where the water is considered to have a high mineral content are considered to have hard water. The harder the water, the more likely to see these particles in the ice. These particles are usually calcium carbonate.

  • The colder water becomes, the less capable it is of suspending minerals. As water turns to ice, these particles begin to show up or become visible. Dissolved mineral particles that were not visible have simply been converted to a visible form. This is a normal occurrence, especially in areas with hard water.
