Upright & Chest Freezer - Alarm Operation

Found on some models, the temperature monitor or temperature alarm is designed to warn the owner when the internal freezer temperature becomes potentially unsafe for the proper storage of frozen foods. The alarm operates on household electricity. If power fails, the alarm will not perform. Upright and chest freezers have different types of temperature monitors or alarms.

Upright freezer monitor:

  • The temperature alarm will sound if the freezer temperature rises above 20 degrees F.

  • An ON/OFF switch allows the temperature alarm to be deactivated when not wanted on older models. After the freezer has run long enough to lower the temperature, you may activate the alarm. The alarm is located behind the front grille on older models and on the freezer control panel on newer models.

  • To activate the alarm: push a key or the eraser end of a pencil into the hole marked "ON" and move the rocker switch to the "ON" position on models with the alarm located behind the front grille.

  • To deactivate the alarm: move the switch to the "OFF" position on models with the alarm located behind the front grille.

  • For models with the temperature alarm on the freezer control panel, when first plugged in the High Temp alarm will be displayed on the control along with an audible warning. Pressing "Alarm Reset" on the control will silence the alarm.

Chest freezer monitor:

  • The temperature alarm on older chest freezer models will sound if the temperature in the freezer rises to 10 degrees F. or higher than normal for the selected setting. The alarm (usually on the back of the freezer next to the control dial) is controlled by a 3-position switch.

  • "OFF" prevents the alarm from sounding when the freezer is warm as it is during cool-down, when defrosting or during initial start-up.

  • "TEST" causes the alarm to sound regardless of temperature. Test the system regularly - at least once a month.

  • "ON" is the setting for normal freezer use. Be sure to return the switch to "ON" when the freezer has cooled down after defrosting.

  • The alarm may sound if the temperature control dial is turned to a much colder setting, as from "2" to "5". It may also sound if a large amount of unfrozen food is added at one time, causing the freezer temperature to rise.

  • Select, newer chest freezer models may have an audible temperature alarm. On these models, the audible temperature alarm indicates that the freezer temperature is too high. The alarm may be reset by pressing the Alarm Reset button.

Caution: Adding more than 3 lbs. of warm food per cubic foot of freezer capacity at a time can trigger the alarm system.
