Washer - Noise Heard When Filling with Water

If you are hearing a squealing or whistling sound as your Washer fills with water, or if you hear a banging sound, the following tips may be able to help you resolve the issue.

Squealing or Whistling Sound

This noise may occur while the Washer is filling. It may be caused by too much water pressure. Try adjusting the hot and cold water valves on the water supply to the Washer. If the noise diminishes after adjusting the valves, the squealing or whistling is likely caused by the pressure of the water supply to your home. You may want to contact a plumber to check on reducing the overall water pressure in your home. If this does not correct the problem, the screens in the water valves on the Washer may need to be cleaned or the water valves may need to be replaced.

Check the Water Valve Screens for Blockage

  1. Unplug the Washer from the wall outlet.
  2. Turn off the water at the inlet faucets.
  3. Pull the Washer away from the wall to allow enough room to get behind it.
  4. Locate the hose connections on Washer. Using a pair of slip-joint pliers, turn the metal hose connections counter-clockwise to remove them from the Washer.
  5. Allow the hoses to hang into a bucket to catch any water.
  6. The water valves are on the back of the Washer where the hoses were connected. The screens are inside the water valves where the hot and cold water lines are connected.
  7. Some models have metal screens and some models have plastic screens. Gently pry out the metal screens with a small screwdriver or the plastic screens with needle nose pliers. Be careful to not damage the screens.
  8. Clean the screens with a toothbrush to remove deposits.
  9. Reinstall the screens, attach the hoses, turn the water on and check for leaks.
  10. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet and slide the Washer back into place.

Banging Sound

This noise may occur when the washer is filling. This is most likely caused by plumbing problems such as loose, rattling pipes. You may need to call a plumber to correct the problem.
