Washer - Water Temperature
Water temperature plays a large part in getting clothes clean. The Owner's Manual for the specific washer you own will have guidance for the recommended water temperature for each wash cycle.
Using a Cold Water Temperature in a Washer
Using cold water when doing laundry does help to save energy. There are laundry detergents that are specially designed to provide very effective cleaning using cold water.
Normally, when selecting a Warm wash for a load of laundry, models from past decades had a 50% mix of hot and cold water flowing into the tub. With later models (starting in 1995), this mix changed slightly in favor of more cold than hot water to meet new government energy guidelines, 42% hot to 58% cold. This provides energy and cost savings to consumers.
Detergent performance can be seriously affected when used in extremely cold water, usually below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, during winter months, if the cold water inlet temperature is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, then a Warm wash setting should be selected rather than a Cold wash.
