Washers Removing Lime From the Washer Tub

The lime build-up in the tub is usually caused by the use of a high carbonate detergent.

If lime build-up occurs:

  • Try using a non-carbonate detergent. Harsh or strong cleaners are not recommended because they may damage the porcelain tub.
  • If changing detergent does not work, run the washer through a wash and rinse cycle with a cup of vinegar. Caution: This should not be done on a regular basis because of the effect vinegar has on the porcelain. However, the risk in using the vinegar is not as great as the damage that the lime build-up can cause.

Other than lime build-up, vinegar should never be used in the porcelain tub. "Lime-Away" may be used if applied lightly and wiped off immediately, followed by a rinse cycle.
