Dishwasher - Yellow or Brown Stains on Dishes

Should you notice yellow or brown stains on dishes after they have been through a wash cycle in your dishwasher, there are reasons why this may have occurred. The tips below can help with resolving the concern.

Preventing Yellow or Brown Stains on Dishes or Utensils in a Dishwasher

Yellow or brown stains on dishes are not typically caused by the dishwasher.

• Tea or coffee stains in cups can be removed by hand using a solution of 1/2 cup bleach and 3 cups of warm water.
• An overall yellow or brown film on dishes can be caused by iron deposits in water. This may be apparent on glassware which develops a yellow or brown tint but is still transparent. The installation of an iron filter in the water supply line removes the cause of this problem and is the only permanent solution.
• Yellow film on sterling silver can result when copper utensils are washed in the same load.
