Venting Systems - Range Hood Damper

A range hood damper, also called a draft regulator, prevents back drafts of air from entering the kitchen through the ductwork of a range hood ventilation system. GE Appliances offers an optional damper accessory, item number JXDA22 that can be used with a standard 7" round duct. The JXDA22 is available for purchase on our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.

Using a Range Hood Damper With a Venting System

All 1992 and older vented hoods came with a damper installed with the appliance.

Beginning with the 1993 line, three models with a 7" round duct (JV322S, JV324S and JV624S) did not come with a damper. The damper was available as an accessory for these models. All other 1993 vented range hoods included a damper as part of the hood.

Note: The JXDA22 fits on top of the hood and is made for 7" round duct models only.

There are some instances where there is no need for a damper.

  • The wall or roof cap already includes a damper.
  • If the appliance is in a warmer climate where there is no drawing of colder air, you may choose to not use a damper.

If the wall or roof cap does not have a damper, GE Appliances recommends the use of a range hood with a damper or a model with optional damper capability in areas of cooler/colder climates to prevent back drafts and in warmer climates to prevent insects from passing down through the venting system.
