Range & Wall Oven - Cleaning Standard Oven Racks in Self-Clean Ovens
Ranges and Wall Ovens typically come with standard chrome plated oven racks or shelves. It is important to note that some new Range and Wall Oven models come with self-clean oven racks that are specifically designed to be left in the oven for cleaning during a self-clean cycle. These are not shiny, chrome plated racks. These are porcelain coated racks.
Cleaning a Standard (Chrome Plated) Oven Rack in a Self-Clean Oven
The standard oven racks or shelves are chrome plated and can be cleaned in a self-cleaning oven. However, it is not recommended since they may discolor and lose some of their luster. They typically discolor to a deep gray after self-cleaning. To keep the luster, the racks should cleaned with soap and water rather than cleaned in the oven's self-cleaning cycle.
- When standard oven racks have been cleaned in a self-cleaning oven, not only will they discolor to a deep gray, but they often become difficult to slide. You can put some vegetable oil on a soft cloth or paper towel and rub onto the left and right edges of the rack to make it easier to pull out and push in.
Commercial oven cleaner may used for the racks, but some cleaners cause discoloration. Be sure to do a small test area to check the results, and rinse the racks thoroughly after cleaning.
