Microwave - Oven Door Glass Breakage

While it is not common, it is possible for the oven door glass on a microwave to break.

Understanding Oven Door Glass Breakage on a Microwave

The microwave industry uses "Heat Strengthened Glass" for glass doors. This is a heat treatment process the glass is put through that allows it to withstand a certain amount of impact. In the rare case the glass does break, it is designed to break into small pieces. All glass used in GE Appliances microwaves is tested and approved for use under Underwriters Laboratory's (UL) microwave standard.

GE Appliances, like other manufacturers, are aware of a very small rate of "spontaneous glass breaks." These breakages are believed to be caused by a small impurity in the glass which can cause it to fail (usually during thermal cycling). This failure mode is known to UL and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In summary, our microwaves have an excellent safety record. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our products. Unfortunately, any product that has glass in it, can break. We use glass that has been tested and approved by UL and we are compliant with all safety regulations for microwave ovens. As with our all products, if a consumer has an issue, we work hard to remedy the situation to their satisfaction.
