Upright & Chest Freezer - Benefit of Wrap Around Condenser and Evaporator

Upright and chest freezers always have a condenser and evaporator as a part of their design. The information provided below explains the design and purpose of the condenser and evaporator.

Understanding the Condenser and Evaporator on a Chest and Upright Freezer

Wrap Around Condenser

The condenser is used to get rid of the heat from within the freezer. For both chest and upright freezers, the tubing for the condenser runs just inside the outside wall of the freezer. It is sandwiched between the inner and outer wall.

  • On chest freezers, it wraps around the back, sides and front of the freezer.

  • On upright freezers, it wraps around the back, sides and top of the freezer.

Wrap Around Evaporator (Also Called an Internal Evaporator)

The evaporator is used to cool the freezer.

  • On chest freezers, the wrap around evaporator is attached inside the walls of the appliance much like that of the wrap around condenser.

  • On manual defrost upright freezers, the shelves are the evaporator and the coils of the evaporator are wrapped back and forth to form the shelf on which you place the food.

  • On frost free upright freezers, the evaporator is located in an area on the lower bottom of the appliance and protrudes into the freezer slightly at the back. Freezers with baskets usually have shorter depth baskets to account for this evaporator space being taken up.
