Microwave Other Uses Not Recommended

Microwaves are specifically designed to heat beverages and heat, dry or cook food. Use microwaves only for its intended use as described in the use and care manual.

It is not intended for:

  • laboratory or industrial use

  • to dry newspapers (if overheated, they can catch fire)

  • melting wax or paraffin

  • heating towels or rags

  • heating undergarments

Drying flowers is the only non-food use of microwaves we will accept:

Flowers may be dried in a microwave oven by placing in a microwave safe bowl with silica gel, sifted cat litter, equal amounts of borax and cornmeal, or a commercial product called Petalast.

  • Cut off all but one-half inch of the stem on each flower, and push a toothpick through remaining stems. Cut off protruding end of the toothpick.

  • Put each flower into a container stem-side down with enough drying agent to cover the bottom half of the flowers. Spoon drying agent between petals.

  • Place a cup of water in the back of the oven. Microwave on high, experimenting to find precisely how much time you`ll need.

  • Light, airy flowers, like wild flowers, will need about 90 seconds for 4-6 containers. Denser flowers will need 2-3 minutes for 2-inch flowers.

  • After microwaving, leave flowers in containers to set for 8-12 hours.
