Oven Gasket Not Sealing Properly

If your oven door is sticking out, you feel heat escaping, or in general you feel it is not sealing properly, check the following:

New installation:

  • On a new gas or electric wall oven or range, it may seem that the door is not closing tightly or sticks out too far from the face of the oven. This is normal. After the oven is used several times the gasket will become more pliable and "mold" itself to the door and oven cavity to create a tighter seal. To speed the process the oven may be ran through a short self clean cycle.
  • If the oven door was removed during installation, make sure it was reinstalled properly. Instructions for removal and replacement of the door are in your owner's manual or installation instructions.

Normal Concerns:

  • It is normal to feel some heat leaking around the oven door. The oven requires some airflow for even baking and therefore does not have or need an airtight seal. The door may move in another 1/4" when pushed.
  • Major leaks will be designated by scorching or smoke stains on oven face. If this occurs, service would be needed. Some causes for this can be the oven door gasket could be damaged or worn, the hinge is broken or misaligned, etc.
