Top Freezer Refrigerator - How to Change the Water Filter

Some Top Freezer refrigerators have built-in water filtration. On these models, the water filter cartridge is located in the back, upper right corner of the fresh food compartment. The following information will help you to replace the water filter in your fridge.

In some instances, when the refrigerator is delivered, the water filter bypass plug is in place of the filter cartridge. The water filter bypass plug needs to be removed before the water filter cartridge is installed. Keep the water filter bypass plug in case you need to use it in the future. If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 1-800-561-3344.

When to Replace the Filter:

The filter cartridge should be replaced every six months or earlier if the flow of water to the icemaker and dispenser decreases. The water supply to the refrigerator does not have to be turned off when replacing the water filter.

Replacing the Water Filter Cartridge:

When you are replacing the filter cartridge, you first remove the old one. To open the cartridge cover, push in on the front of the cover and it will drop down.

  1. Remove the cartridge by slowly rotating it to the left. A small amount of water may drip down. Caution: If air has been trapped in the system, the filter cartridge may be ejected as it is removed. Use caution when removing.

  2. Mark your calendar to remind you to replace the filter cartridge in six months.

  3. Remove the protective foil from the end of the cartridge.

  4. Position the cartridge inside the cartridge holder and slowly rotate the cartridge to the right until is stops. When the cartridge is properly installed, you will feel it “click” as it locks into place. The blade on the end of the cartridge should be positioned vertically. Do not overtighten the filter.

  5. Close the cartridge cover.

  6. Run water from the dispenser (on models so equipped) for 3 minutes (about 1 ½ gallons) to clear the system and prevent sputtering. On models without a dispenser, simply discard the first few batches of ice produced immediately after replacing the filter cartridge.

Note: A newly installed water filter cartridge may cause water to spurt from the dispenser.

Filter Bypass Plug:

You must use the water filter bypass plug when a water filter cartridge is not installed. The dispenser (on models so equipped) and icemaker will not operate without the filter or filter bypass plug in place.
