Window Air Conditioner - Winterizing or Storage

Although it is not a necessity to remove your window room air conditioner during the winter months, you may choose to do so. If possible, uninstall and store smaller models in an attic or basement during the winter months.

Winterizing or Storing a Window Air Conditioner

Obviously, a very large window air conditioner may be awkward to remove from the window for storage. A built-in air conditioner would not need to be uninstalled from the wall case during the Winter months.

• Turn off and unplug the air conditioner if it will not be used for a significant length of time.
• The air conditioner can be stored in a non-heated area, but be sure to keep it upright. If the appliance is placed on its sides or back, the compressor could be damaged. If on its side or back for more than a day, leave in an upright position and unplugged for 24 hours prior to plugging it in and using it.
• Larger window and built-in air conditioners can be covered for protection from snow and ice. Covers for air conditioners can typically be purchased at a local hardware or home improvement store or from on-line retailers.
