Chest Freezer - Proper Temperature and Control Settings

The temperature controls on a Chest Freezer are designed to be simple to use. Of course, you want to make sure you have set the temperature control correctly to get the optimal use of the Chest Freezer. You can always consult the Owner's Manual for the specific model you own for details on setting the controls. We are providing information on the common types of Chest Freezer controls and how to use them below.

Setting the Temperature

The temperature selection on a Chest Freezer is made by setting the dial from ONE to SEVEN, with SEVEN being the coldest. The normal safe freezing level is obtained by setting the control on FOUR. Turning the temperature control all the way to the left to the OFF position will turn the power off to the compressor. Unplugging the power cord completely removes power to the appliance. The number settings on the dial do not equate to a specific temperature.

Some Chest Freezer models have a dial with settings from MAX (maximum) to MIN (minimum) or Cold to Coldest. The normal safe freezing level is obtained by setting the control to the midpoint on the dial. On models with the MAX to MIN settings on the dial, turning the dial to the OFF position will turn off power to the appliance. On models with the Cold to Coldest settings on the dial, the power to the freezer cannot be disconnected by any setting on the control panel. You must unplug the freezer to turn power off to the Freezer. The MAX to MIN or Cold to Coldest position settings on the dial do not equate to a specific temperature.

Temperature Control Indicator Lights

Some Chest Freezers may have green, red and yellow lights located on the appliance.

  • The green light is the Power-On light.
  • The red light is the Unsafe Temperature light.
  • The yellow light/switch is the Alarm Reset light.
The yellow light will flash when the red temperature light is on. You must press the Alarm Reset Button to turn the yellow light off. If the yellow light is flashing and the red temperature light is off, you most likely have experienced a home power loss. You must press the Alarm Reset Button to turn the yellow light off.
