Microwave - Recipe Conversion
Most regular recipes can be converted for use with a Microwave Oven with minor changes in the technique used. The nature of cooking in a Microwave should be taken into consideration. For example, less browning, less evaporation of liquids, or reduced cooking times are expected when using a conventional recipe in a Microwave Oven.
It is recommended to follow a similar Microwave recipe and adapt your conventional recipe accordingly. Follow the power level designated in the similar recipe or use power level 10, if there is not a designation.
General Guidelines for Conventional to Microwave Recipe Conversion
- Reduce the liquid by approximately 1/3, although this is not always necessary.
- Reduce the seasonings by 1/4 to 1/3 if more than 1/8 teaspoon is used.
- Reduce the actual cooking time to 1/4 to 1/3 of that given in the conventional recipe. For example, if something takes 1 hour conventionally, then it would just take 15 - 20 minutes in the Microwave.
Reducing a Conventional Recipe for Microwave Cooking
- To reduce a recipe in half, reduce the cooking time by 1/3 and keep the power level the same.
Increasing a Recipe for Microwave Cooking
- To double a recipe, add 1/2 to 2/3 more cooking time (do not double the time), and decrease the liquid by 1/4 to 1/2.
