Microwave Food is Not Brown When Cooked

The following suggestions can be used to enhance the appearance of food prepared in the microwave:

  • Try using a browning skillet, browning or gravy type sauce, or browning agent.
  • Finish cooking by baking or broiling in a conventional oven.
  • Use a topping or frosting on cakes. Add cocoa, cinnamon, instant coffee powder, or food coloring to pie crust dough or use a crumb crust.
  • Dense foods that cook longer and have a high fat content will show some browning.
  • Some foods, like pork chops and cakes, cook so quickly that there is not time to develop the familiar browned appearance.
