Heating Baby Formula in Microwave

We have not performed specific testing on preparing baby formula in a microwave oven. Baby formula can be heated in the bottle in the microwave if the following precautions are taken:

  • Use the microwave to heat the bottles for serving only.
  • Do not boil or sterilize bottles in the microwave. Water can be boiled, but should be done in a larger container then transferred to the bottle. When making large amounts of formula, surface unit preparation is usually more efficient.
  • Make sure that the bottle is microwave safe. Check the manufacturer's information.
  • Nipples or tops should be removed when heating the bottle in the microwave.
  • It is not recommended to heat bottles with sterile plastic liners in the microwave. Overheating can cause the plastic bags to melt.
  • It will take experimenting to determine the proper microwave times for heating formula in the microwave oven. The times will be in seconds, not minutes.

Caution: Always test the formula temperature before feeding the infant.
