Dishwasher Preventing Milky Discoloration

Milky discoloration on glassware is called etching. Etching is a permanent discoloration of glassware. It is often caused by using too much detergent in soft water. Once glasses are etched, the cloudiness is permanent and cannot be removed.Symptoms: Etching will first appear as a rainbow-like discoloration on the surface of the glass. It will then change to a milky discoloration. Etching cannot be corrected by hand washing.Preventative Measures:

  • Use less detergent and no rinse aid if your water is naturally soft or if treated with a home water softening system.
  • The entering water must be at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit and not more than 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
