Refrigerator - Cloudy or Discolored Ice Cubes

We know you may be concerned or perhaps just curious as to why the ice cubes in your refrigerator appear cloudy or discolored. We are providing various reasons why ice cubes may appear cloudy or discolored below.

Understanding Why Ice Cubes May Be Cloudy or Discolored

Greenish / Bluish Cubes

Under rare circumstances, ice cubes may be discolored with a green-bluish color. The cause of this unusual discoloration is often due to a combination of factors including the local water supply, household plumbing, and the accumulation of copper salts in an inactive water supply line which feeds the icemaker. This issue should be resolved by a plumber as soon as possible.

Cloudy Cubes

Dissolved minerals and trapped air are the cause of cloudy cubes. This is normal and not harmful in any way. The cubes freeze so fast that the air and minerals do not have time to dissipate. Using a filtration system or a reverse osmosis system will help somewhat but the cubes will never be completely clear.

Discolored Cubes

The household water supply and plumbing pipes could cause the ice cubes to be discolored. The refrigerator, freezer, or icemaker does not cause discolored ice cubes.

Note: All the circumstances mentioned above are the result of either the household water supply or the plumbing pipes that feed the water to the icemaker. Since this issue is not caused by the refrigerator, freezer, or icemaker, Bodewell cannot assist in resolving the issue.
