Refrigerator - Door Will Not Close

If your refrigerator or freezer door will not close, there are several things that you should check prior to scheduling repair service.

Diagnosing a Refrigerator or Freezer Door That Will Not Close

Door Blocked

  • Food items may be blocking the door.
  • Items such as pizza boxes may stick out just far enough to prevent the door from closing completely.
  • Bins that are not closed properly will prevent the door from closing. Close all bins prior to closing the door.
  • Heavy items on the door may have a tendency to fall forward as the door is closing, preventing the door from shutting completely. Rearrange the items on the door to prevent this from happening.
  • Check to see if a small ice cube is preventing the freezer door from closing all the way.

Installation/Leveling

  • If your refrigerator is not leveled properly, the door will not shut on its own. Please take a look at our Refrigerator - How to Level article.
  • On many 2017 and newer Side-by-Side refrigerators, packing/shipping foam (if not removed) may prevent the door from closing.
    • Check at the very bottom of the doors for the presence of packing foam. If it is still on the doors, remove the blue tape and take off the foam. Then, check that the door can close properly.

Hinge Broken

  • This will require service.
