Refrigerator - Disappearing Ice Cubes

When ice cubes are stored in the freezer for an extended period of time, they will shrink and sometimes almost disappear. There is a scientific explanation for this occurrence.

Understanding Why Ice Cubes Shrink and Disappear

It is normal for ice cubes to shrink, and even disappear, as they age. This process is similar to evaporation, but is called sublimation. During the process of sublimation, the water goes directly from a solid state (ice) to a gaseous state (vapor), without ever passing through the liquid state.

You should discard old cubes and let the icemaker make fresh ones. Not only are they small, but they may not taste fresh when stored for such a long period of time.
