Refrigerator Self-Tapping Water Valve

The shut-off water valve (also called a saddle valve) is part of the household plumbing. It controls the flow of water from the plumbing to the refrigerator.

  • Self-tapping or self-piercing water valves (saddle valves) are not recommended, as they do not provide a large enough opening for the water to pass through. Restricted water flow to the icemaker can result in small ice cubes, slow production of ice cubes and hollow cubes.
  • Use a water valve that requires drilling a 1/4 inch hole in the pipe instead of a self-tapping valve, when possible.. This type of water valve (saddle valve) will need to be purchased at a local hardware or plumbing supply store.

The warranty on the refrigerator or icemaker covers manufacturing defects only. Any problems resulting from improperly installed plumbing or the use of incorrect parts is not covered by the appliance warranty and will result in service charges.
