Dryer - Odor

Some dryer odors are normal, especially when the dryer is used for the first time. Most smells that comes from the dryer should be checked, though.

Oily or Burning Smell During Operation

  • During initial use of a new gas or electric dryer, you may notice an odor that has an oily or burning smell. This odor is considered normal and may be emitted as the natural oils deposited from human hands during product assembly or dust accumulated on various mechanical parts burns off during initial operation.
  • To eliminate this problem odor, run your empty dryer for 20 minutes. If this odor is noticeable on installed dryers, check the venting for possible build up of lint. A lint build up odor may emit a burning smell or musty scent.

Gas Odor

  • An incorrect flame size and color will result in a slight gas odor. The normal flame color is blue with a slight amount of yellow on the tip.
  • If the flame is yellow, please schedule a repair appointment with GE Appliances Factory Service.
