Gas Range - Oven Safety Concerns When a Standing Pilot Light Goes Out

Freestanding Gas Range models with an oven pilot ignition have a 1/8" flame. The amount of gas furnished to burn the oven pilot is minimal. If the pilot should go out, gas is immediately shut off to the main burner. However, there is still a small amount of gas that will continue to flow to the oven pilot.

Understanding Oven Safety Concerns When a Standing Pilot Light Goes Out on a Gas Range

All Free Standing Gas Range pilots are approved by the American Gas Association. There is not enough leakage to create a hazard. Studies show that people will be able to smell gas when the amount is only one fifth of that needed to cause an explosion.

Caution: If this condition is left unattended for a long period of time (several hours), it can create a hazardous condition.
