Range - 12 Hr Automatic Oven Shut-Off on Older Models

The oven on wall ovens and ranges with touch pad clock or LCD controls automatically shut off after 12 hours unless overridden. You get both peace of mind and energy savings if the oven is accidentally left on. Models with no clock or timer typically don't have the automatic shutdown feature.

Understanding the 12 Hour Automatic Oven Shut-Off Feature

When the feature was first introduced in 1995, some models had the automatic oven shut-off and others did not. It quickly became standard, though. An "override" feature was also introduced a bit later. This allows the 12 hour shut-off to be deactivated so that the oven can be used for longer than 12 hours at a time.

Deactivating (Overriding) the Automatic Shut-Off

To determine if an older model from this time period has the 12 Hour Automatic Oven Shut-Off Override feature, you can try deactivating it at your control panel.

1. Make sure the oven is not in use (bake, broil, etc.).
2. Press the Minute slew pads (Up or Down arrow) for 4 seconds.
3. The display will show the word OFF (meaning the oven will shut down after 12 hours) or ON (meaning it will not shut down after 12 hours).

If the control on your older oven doesn't show these options, it likely doesn't have the Automatic Shutdown and/or the Override.  You'll get instructions for deactivating the automatic shut off in your range's Owner's Manual.
