Refrigerator - On/Off Switch on the Icemaker

The icemaker in a refrigerator can be turned On and Off in one of many ways. The way you turn the icemaker On and Off depends upon the icemaker design and the refrigerator model you own. We are providing instruction on how to turn the icemaker On and Off for various icemaker styles below.

Option on the Control Panel

Some refrigerators have an Icemaker ON/OFF selection on the control panel. You would see an Icemaker pad, or Icemaker setting on LCD touch pad models, in the same display as the temperature controls. For these refrigerator models, you turn the icemaker ON and OFF using the control panel on the fridge.

  • Consult the Owner's Manual for instructions on turning the icemaker ON and Off using the control panel if your model has this feature.

ON/OFF Toggle Switch

This icemaker design has an ON/OFF switch similar to a light or power switch. ON is at the top of the toggle switch while OFF is at the bottom of the toggle switch. This type of icemaker is found on many different styles of refrigerator.

  1. To turn ON the icemaker, set the power switch to I (ON).
  2. When the icemaker is turned on, the green power light will come on.
  3. To turn OFF the icemaker, set the power switch to O (OFF).

ON/OFF Slide Switch

Some icemakers have an ON/OFF slide switch. ON and OFF are labeled on the icemaker. Slide the switch to the right to turn the icemaker OFF. Slide the switch to the left to turn the icemaker ON. When the icemaker is turned ON, the horizontal paddle is extended out over the ice. Turning the icemaker OFF slides the paddle back under the icemaker. When the ice bucket is full the paddle is also under the icemaker, since the ice cubes in the full ice bucket keep the paddle from springing forward. This type of icemaker is primarily found in Bottom-Freezer and French-Door style refrigerators, though it can be found in other styles as well.

  1. To turn ON the icemaker, slide the switch to the left so that the paddle is extended out past the icemaker.
  2. To turn OFF the icemaker, slide the switch to the right so the paddle is under the icemaker.
Turning the icemaker OFF does not power it down. On slide switch icemakers with the green LED indicator light, the LED light will remain on when the icemaker is turned OFF.

Wire Feeler Arm

Non-electronic icemakers have a metal wire feeler arm on the side of the icemaker. This type of icemaker is found primarily on older Top-Freezer and Side-by-Side style refrigerators.

  1. To turn ON the icemaker, lower the feeler arm to the ON (down) position.
  2. To turn OFF the icemaker, raise the feeler arm to the STOP (up) position.
See the Owner's Manual for your refrigerator to determine if the icemaker has an ON/OFF switch or if a feeler arm is used.
