Gas Range & Cooktop - Surface Burners Not Clicking, Not Trying to Ignite

To minimize the possibility of electric shock, unplug this appliance from the power supply before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

We understand how frustrating it is when one or all of the surface burners on a gas Range or Cooktop will not light. If the burner(s) are not clicking and will not ignite, there are things you can check in order to try to get them working without the need for a repair.

Diagnosing Gas Surface Burners That Are Not Clicking or Igniting

If one or more of the surface burners is not trying to light (not clicking), please check the following:

  • Make sure the correct burner is selected. Match the burner to the correct switch.
  • Verify that the burner knob was first turned to the Lite position. Only after turning the knob to the Lite position and a flame is visible around the burner should the knob be turned to the desired cooking setting.
  • Make sure the burner cap is on the correct burner. Your Range or Cooktop may have one or more burners of different sizes. For example, if a medium burner cap is placed on a small burner, the burner will not work properly.
  • Check to see if there is power to the Range or Cooktop at the electrical plug outlet. Check to make sure the circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the appliance is not tripped.
  • For a Gas Range, try turning on the oven. If the oven comes on but no surface burners work, then you will need to contact service.
