Washer - Burning or Rubber Odor in a New Washer

A burning rubber smell coming from a new washer could be the inlet hoses. Sometimes new inlet hoses put off a strong rubber odor that can be mistaken for a burning smell.

Diagnosing a Burning or Rubber Odor in a New Washer

Checking if the odor is from the inlet hoses:

  1. Start the washer so it fills with hot water.
  2. Stop the washer before it starts to agitate.

If you can smell the burning rubber odor from only the fill cycle (no motor or pump running) before it even starts to agitate, the problem is just the hoses. This is normal and will start to fade over time.
